Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to involve my neighbour if I'm redoing or changing the fence between us?

Yes, in Queensland a dividing fence is owned by both you and your neighbour. If you want to make any changes to your fence you need to propose them in writing to your neighbour. Give them time to seek alternative quotes or suggest changes to the plan—after all, they will usually be paying for half. If, however, the fence you want is more expensive than a ‘standard' fence, you pay the extra.

  • How tall can my fence be?

What is considered a standard fence can vary from street to street but is usually 900 – 1800 high. If you’re building a fence over 2 metres tall in your yard, you may need a permit from your local council. Pool fences must be a minimum of 1.2 metres tall, with gate latches no less than 1.5 metres off the ground.

  • There hasn't been a dividing fence between me and my neighbour before—what's the standard?

The Queensland Government defines a ‘sufficient' boundary fence as the neighbourhood standard or something you and your neighbour agree on. If most of the houses in your street have a simple 0.5m tall chain link fence, this may be the standard. Bear this in mind when planning your new fence.
