This depends on the type of mulch you are using and the area that needs to be covered. A light mulch can be applied in a layer as thick as 10cm, but thicker and chunkier mulches may only need to be applied in a layer of 2–3cm or so.
Applying mulch just after the wet season, when the soil is still wet, can help preserve some of that moisture. Alternatively, you can mulch in mid-spring to prepare the soil for new growth in summer. Keep in mind that lighter mulches may need to be replaced after a year, while chunkier mulches can last for 2–3 years. The thicker the mulch, the longer it takes to break down.
